Pneumococcal Evolution and Vaccine Effectiveness

Program
To help CDC contribute to research about genetic changes in pneumococcal bacteria that impact the effectiveness of vaccination in developing countries. CDC will provide isolates from their Global Pneumococcal Strain Bank, sequence isolates from the Active Bacterial Core surveillance collaboration, and provide expert guidance on analysis and interpretation of the data.

Monitoring and Evaluation of Typhoid Conjugate Vaccination Campaign

Program
To assess the acceptability, safety, feasibility and cost of a Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine (TCV) delivered as part of a ministry-led campaign in Harare, Zimbabwe. This evaluation will provide lessons learned and recommendations for future use of TCV in outbreak settings, and to inform typhoid control strategies.

To compare the immunogenicity of current vaccines for pneumococcal disease (native pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine) with a proposed new vaccination method (microsphere entrapped pneumococcal capsular polysaccharides delivered either subcutaneously or intranasally).

Program
To conduct targeted assessments involving vaccine research and surveillance. The current studies range from a meningitis carriage study in Burkina Faso to measure the impact of the MenA vaccine, to rotavirus surveillance in Mozambique to look at vaccine effectiveness.

Program
To support the introduction of a change in Burkina Faso’s infant pneumococcal vaccine schedule to include a booster dose and to evaluate the impact of the country’s capacity to control pneumococcal disease among children and adults.
